Deceased Name: Miriam Oreck Long

MN United States

Miriam Oreck Long whispered loving farewells to her family and her many friends before passing away on Feb. 5, 2005 in Napa, Calif. Miriam, daughter of Abram and Annie Oreck of Duluth, Minn., was born on Aug. 4, 1922. She was a graduate of Duluth Central High School. Upon graduation from high school at 16, Miriam traveled with her older sister, Charlotte, to New York City where she studied ballet at the School of the American Ballet under the direction of George Balanchine. She pursued ballet training and performance with what would later become the New York City Ballet while also attending Hunter College in New York City. Her love of the arts was expressed in every aspect of her life, and the grace with which she shared her appreciation of art and literature greatly enriched the lives of her family and her friends. In her long life, she was an accomplished interior designer and business partner to her husband. After a successful career as wife, mother and professional in her native Duluth and on Hilton Head Island, S.C., she and her husband, Sherman, retired to Coral Gables, Fla., to live with their daughter, Deborah, and her family. During the last six years, she was an avid horticulturalist and dedicated volunteer at the Fairchild Tropical Gardens Herbarium in Coral Gables, Fla. There, she spent many years preparing and preserving rare botanical specimens gathered from around the world by the Garden's botanists for Fairchild's world renowned research facility. 'Miriam's artistic touch was an invaluable asset to the Herbarium, and her thoughtful and sensitive presence will be greatly missed by all of us,' said Lynka Woodbury, Herbarium Manager. Last year she and Sherman moved to Napa, Calif., to be with their son, Jeffrey, and his family. In this lovely setting she enjoyed many happy moments filled with friends and family. Miriam is survived by Sherman B. Long, her loving husband of 63 years; her son, Jeffrey Long of Napa, Calif., and his companion, Sara Hansen; her son, Martin Long of Atlanta, Georgia and his wife, Natalie; and her daughter, Deborah Long of Coral Gables, Fla. and her husband, Brian McLaughlin; her sister and brother-in-law, Marge and Robert Alpern of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; six grandchildren, and eight nieces and nephews. MEMORIAL SERVICE:is planned for early summer in Duluth, Minn. In lieu of flowers, Miriam requested that donations be made to the Fairchild Tropical Gardens Herbarium in care of Lynka Woodbury at 11935 Old Cutler Road, Coral Gables, FL 33156. For further information concerning donations, please call (305) 667-1651, ext. 3427.
